Riad Karmela, Marrakesh: hotel review

Joel, the owner, loves flea markets and has created a relaxed atmosphere in
the artefact-rich courtyards, which invite you to spend quiet evenings
recharging after negotiating the throngs in the medina. Every whitewashed
wall is thoughtfully adorned with artisan-carved plasterwork, an intricate
wooden frieze or a gilded mirror, and hidden nooks have log fireplaces and
snug leather seating. The candlelit main courtyard, with its rose-petal
strewn fountain, plunge pool and mature orange trees, is the favoured
hangout. However, the roof terrace which would benefit from some new chairs.

Service 8/10

Super. Mint tea and pastries are brought on arrival and lots of personal
attention is given to guests whether they were travelling on their own or in
large groups, with advice offered on sights, activities, local bars and
restaurants. Waiting staff were efficient with a lively sense of humour.

Rooms 7/10

There are 19, with simple colour schemes, a tasteful mix of textiles,
ornaments and lanterns, and wooden shutters. One of the best, the red junior
suite Kaiss, has a balcony overlooking the main courtyard and a four-poster
bed. Two others have terraces and there are two apartments with three
inter-linking rooms. Doubles in the most recently renovated courtyard have a
more modern feel.

Food and drink 7/10

A fresh, three-course dinner menu is set each day using what was bought at the
morning market (£16 - £20 per person). We were very satisfied with Moroccan
lentil soup and a dish of saffron sardines, followed by a well-prepared
chicken and preserved lemon tagine and finally a macaroon tower with vanilla
ice cream, strawberries and mint. The rather standard buffet breakfast is
also served in the courtyard. Beware the cheeky sparrows and the odd
gallivanting tortoise on the striped rugs underfoot.

Value for money 9/10

Excellent. It's quiet, comfortable and affordable, with doubles from £45,
rising to £90 for a suite. The apartments, sleeping up to five, are great
for families or groups of friends.

Access for guests with disabilities

Due to the age of the building there is no disabled access.
